An exciting cornet solo in fast-slow-fast form, written as the title track to Iain Culross' debut studio album. Cornettists will enjoy the challenge of this modern cornet solo, which challenges dexterity, musicality and range, which is more akin to trumpet range.

The tone of Vanguard is dark, brutal but somehow very poetic, particularly in the middle movement, where there is a particular Scottish flavour in the writing.

Experienced conductors will note some subtle moments in the harmony, where the composer has juxtaposed light and dark moments, and in one particular bar, the unfolding of the harmony that moves the sonic balance from warmly-dark to warmly-cute. With this in mind, Vanguard is not only a showcase for the cornet soloist, but also a test of musicianship and sense of the dramatic from the band and conductor.
