The "Wow" Signal was inspired by the radio signal that was received by the Ohio State University's Radio Observatory telescope (affectionaly named 'Big Ear') in August 1977. The telescope was used to try and search for alien intelligence. The anomaly on the data was discovered by Jerry R Ehman, an American astronomer. He was so excited and captivated by the signal, that he wrote the word "Wow!" next to it on the printout. The signal appeared to originate from the Sagittarius constellation and was thought to be from extra terrestial beings.
