The Journey of St. Cuthbert is an original work for brass band. Newly released in 2023.
The composer writes:
"The Journey of St Cuthbert is a programmatic brass band work that depicts the journey undertaken by the monks as they carried the remains of St Cuthbert across the North East of England following Viking raids on Lindisfarne. After setting the scene and establishing the atmosphere of Northumbria, the music depicts a sudden Viking raid, forcing the monks to flee and begin their long and arduous journey. The piece reflects the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges of this pilgrimage, moving between moments of tension and struggle and passages of quiet reflection and faith. The work is also deeply personal to the composer, who spent time visiting Northumbria and drew inspiration from places such as Bamburgh, Alnwick and Lindisfarne Holy Island. These historic landscapes helped shape the atmosphere and musical character of the piece, which builds towards a jubilant ending as St Cuthbert finally arrives at his resting place in Durham."
