Be Thou My Vision began as a brass quintet piece for the wedding of two of Tony's dear friends. The quintet that they had, was made of members of the Central Ohio Brass Band and they said that it might make a good brass band piece. Tony set to work on it right away and it came to life rather quickly.
Tony extensively uses the technique of shared monody, where melodic lines create their own harmonies through suspension of individual notes as they pass by. This gives the effect of a long sustain or resonance. The harmonies are very simple, with a big modulation at the climax and closes with the horn solo that started the work.
