Pandora's Box by Naomi Styles.
The composer writes:
"Pandora's Box is a passionate whirlwind of energy. The piece depicts the ancient Greek story in which Pandora was given a sealed box by Zeus and instructed not to open it. However, the curious Pandora opened the box and released all the evils and miseries into the world. Pandora hurried to close the box, but it was too late. The only thing which remained inside when she closed it was hope, offering humanity a source of comfort in their suffering.
Pandora's Box was originally written as a short piece for piano. It was arranged and extended for brass band in 2017. The brass version, with its many runs, accents and interactions between the instruments, brings a wealth of brightness, colour and drama, which continues from the first attacking quavers by the corners at the start to the final bang by the drum as Pandora's Box slams shut.
The music was showcased at the International Brass Band Festival in 2025 in a performance by Athena Brass."
