Matthew Birkett

Matthew Birkett, born in 1989, is a Bb bass player, conductor, composer and arranger of brass band music, known around parts of North West England and North Wales.

He was introduced to music by his mother, who gave him piano lessons. He then progressed to playing the clarinet at primary school, before becoming involved with the brass band movement via his uncle; a commitment which has now spanned over 25 years. 

During that time, he has become proficient as a player, as well as a completely self taught conductor, composer and arranger. Much of his music consists of shorter items for the concert repertoire, as well as some solos with band accompaniment and a few more major works.

He is, at present, associated with the City of Chester Bluecoat Band as a player and bandmaster. Day to day, Matthew is a hospital staff nurse, with a number of years experience.
