Not yet 10 years old, he had already won many piano competitions at music festivals, including such festivals as West Pennine, Ramsbottom and Alderley Edge. At 10 years old, he became the resident organist of the Wharton United Reformed Church in Little Hulton. He held this post for over 18 years.

At 11 years old, he took up the cornet and then changed instruments again to the tuba 3 years later. Between 2005 and 2008, he was a member of the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, where he studied organ and the tuba. He progressed onto the Senior Royal Northern College of Music, where in 2012, he achieved a BMus degree.
